Sports recap Feb. 8 – 14; women’s basketball team goes 2 and 1

Governors State athletic teams wrapped up another week of competition which included men’s and women’s basketball games and a women’s volleyball game.  

 The women’s basketball team opened their week with an away game against St. Xavier. The women fought hard against undefeated-in-conference foes, but ultimately lost 87-72. Tabetha Jones put up 23 points for the Jaguars and led the team with 8 rebounds. On Feb. 11, the women defeated Lincoln College at home. Amber Brooks led the team with 22 points and 15 rebounds, followed by Sharnita Breeze with 13 points. The Lady Jaguars recorded yet another win on Feb. 13 against Judson College with a final score of 57-42. Sharnita Breeze led the way with 13 points, followed by Cozy O’Neal and Angelique Cowan who added 11 points each. Amber Brooks also helped secure the win with an incredible 16 rebounds. The Jaguars are now 7-10 (5-2 in the conference).  

 The men’s basketball team competed in just two games this week. On Feb. 11, they defeated Lincoln College at home in a final score of 72-54. The team was led by Tariq Deere with 17 points and Glenn Rhone with 13. DeAndrey Robinson led the team with an impressive 12 rebounds. The team wrapped up their week with an exciting win against Judson as sophomore Payton Harley nailed a last-second jump shot to secure a 76-75 win for the Jaguars. Sterling Fields and Glenn Rhone scored  18 and 16 points respectively to help push the team to victory. Rhone also led the team with 5 rebounds and 3 steals. The men’s team is now 8-8 (6-2).  

 The women’s volleyball team competed in a home match against Olivet Nazarene on Feb. 9. The team lost all three sets (25-12, 25-21, 25-21). The Jaguars were led by Dunja Tatic, who recorded a double-double with 11 kills and 13 digs. The team now sits at 2-3 (1-2).
